Now, more than a dozen NYFWs later, I’ve come to terms with the twice-annual disruption—and even kind of enjoy it.

Here’s what I’ve learned over the years:

The name “fashion week” is a lie. It’s not a week: It’s a month! While New York Fashion Week is the craziest of them all, it’s just the beginning. Then there’s London, Milan, and Paris. (And, if someone’s really enterprising, ambitious, or behind in accumulating airline elite-status points, Singapore, Seoul, São Paolo, and Tokyo also host fashion weeks.)

Don’t expect to see much of your spouse that month. Family time, group dinners, and even Valentine’s Day will need to be rescheduled, postponed, or re-enacted with a cardboard cutout. Plan on looking after the dog all by yourself. (No babies in our house, so can’t speak to that. Frightened, frankly.) It’s impossible to overstate the professional chaos your partner is enduring.

Do go to the grocery store—and don’t hold back. It’s a good idea to have extra snacks and caffeinated beverages around the house, as early mornings and late nights are de rigueur. Kind bars, iced coffee, and coconut water (the good stuff, not those funky ones that look like juice boxes) are Frommer household staples.

Do accept the invitation to a show or two every year. I’m what you might call moderately into fashion—enough that I co-host a podcast with Lauren about it, but not enough that I read any fashion or style magazines or blogs. (Unless Vice counts?) But I’ve really enjoyed tagging along to a few shows, especially the ones where I might actually wear the clothes (Band of Outsiders) or there’s a good chance of a lot of bizarre, drunk people lurking about (the designer shall remain nameless). I’m happy I got to experience the Bryant Park tents shitshow once before they closed—but I’m even happier I didn’t have to twice. The one tent show I went to was absolute chaos, starting late, with apparently no one in control of a long, angry line to get in.

Do take the opportunity to bum a semi-“free” trip to Europe! I’ve now tagged along on a few trips to Paris and London, and it’s a great time if you can get away. (You’ll have to pay for your own plane ticket, of course—but there should be half of a bed to crash on.) Paris is lovely in the spring and fall, with fewer tourists and even some neat special events and pop-ups because of fashion week. The shows and parties there are in much cooler places than they are in New York, save for the gross, stifling-hot party I endured one year at L’Aquarium de Paris while everyone was waiting for the movie stars to arrive. (BTW: The A.P.C presentation—narrated by sharp and funny founder Jean Touitou—is a personal favorite.) And it’s a great jumping-off point for a vacation the following week. This year, we’ll be heading to Portugal and Spain: the perfect way to wind down after a crazy month.

Seven years ago—when my now-wife Lauren Sherman and I started dating—fashion week transformed from just something I vaguely knew was going on in New York to a regular, intense part of my life.
