Family and celebrities including Barry Bonds,
Macaulay Culkin and a tearful
Elizabeth Taylor mourned
Michael Jackson at a private
funeral service held Thursday night (September 3) outside the elaborate mausoleum where the King of Pop will be entombed.
The funeral began about an hour and a half late because of the tardy arrival of his parents, Joe and Katherine,
and
other family members. The over 200 mourners were left waiting in the
late summer heat, with the temperature stuck at 90 degrees just before
sunset. They
included the singer’s three children, 12-year-old Prince Michael, 10-year-old Paris Michael and 7-year-old Prince Michael
II, a.k.a. Blanket.
At one point, a large, blimp-like inflated light, the type used in
film and television production, and a boom camera hovered over the seating area placed in front of the elaborate marble mausoleum. The
equipment raised the possibility that the footage would be used for the MJ concert documentary This Is It.
After the ceremony, Rev. Al Sharpton tweeted: ”I just spoke at the conclusion of tributes. Gladys Knight sang her heart out. Now we
prepare to lay him top rest.”
He later added: ”MICHAEL JACKSON HAS BEEN LAID TO REST.”
