Hvem var Lucia?
Personen bag vor Lucia-tradition er skytshelgeninde for Syrakus på Sicilien.
Den Lucia, som har helgendag den 13. december er den hellige Lucia af Syrakus, som er denne bys stytshelgeninde. Hun skal have levet under Diocletians kristenforfølgelser, hvor hun blev martyr.
Slæbt afsted til byens bordel
Legenden fortæller, at Lucias mor led af en mave eller underlivssygdom, og derfor drog med datteren til den hellige Agathe af Cathanias grav. Her bad de for moderen, hvorefter Agathe viste sig og gav helbredelse. Hun fortalte desuden Lucia, at hun ville blive martyr. Efter denne oplevelse gav Lucia sine ejendele til de fattige, hvilket fortørnede hendes forlovede. Han angav hende til myndighederne, som besluttede, at hun skulle anbringes i et bordel. Men da man kom for at slæbe hende afsted, stod hun så tungt og fast som en klippe, og end ikke adskillige okser og mænd kunne rokke hende af stedet. Helgeninde for blinde
Et forsøg på at brænde Lucia slog også fejl, og til sidst jog man et sværd gennem hendes hals, hvorefter hun døde. Denne dødsmåde gives som grund til, at hun bl.a. anses for at være særlig god at påkalde i forbindelse med halssygdomme.
En variant af legenden fortæller, at hun river sine smukke øjne ud, så ingen mand skal forelske sig i dem. Derfor kan hun også ses afbildet med sine øje på en plade eller i en lille skål, og opfattes desuden som særlig helgen for de blinde.
