For those of you who know me well know what an animal lover I am. My dog Tjabo who is turning 18 this year in April was once a street dog that had been abandoned. He was found hanging from a football post having been abused but luckily was found in time. The Battersea Dog and Cat home helps dogs and cats like Tjabo to get back their confidence and to have a chance to find a loving home, while also helping to stop such unacceptable behaviour happening to other animals.
So I have decided to take part in the 2012 Artic Dog Sledding Challenge which is organised through Battersea Dog and Cat home. It is a 7 day challenge starting in Oslo, from there we travel to Alta which is on the northern tip of Norway. Once arriving in Alta we are introduced to our dogs and taught all we need to know for our trip. We will be traveling 200km during 5 days to as far north as you can get in Norway. We are assigned 4-6 dogs each which we feed, harness and look after during these days traveling in temperatures down to -30. We wake up early each morning feeding our dogs a couple of hours before we take off for them to have time to digest their food. We will be traveling 25-66km a day. When we arrive at our cabin we settle our dogs for the night and most probably collapse into bed. The terrain varies from mountainous and above tree line to endless frozen lakes.
I will be completing an compulsory intensive training schedule 4 months before hand to prepare for the harsh Artic conditions.
The expedition will be led by Across the Divide Expeditions. The ATD team will be supported by an experienced expedition doctor and a local guide with extensive knowledge of the dogs and the terrain.
For this even to be able to take place and to have a meaning we are expected to raise a minimum of £4000. That is the reason why I am starting so far ahead to make sure I can reach this target. So for those of you who decide to donate money to this event I am truly grateful for you support. All amounts big or small will be greatly appreciated.
