I år var det en kirurg som verkligen imponerade mig, Docent Håkan Brorson. Han är överläkare vid plastikkirurgiska kliniken på Universitetssjukhuset i Malmö och har tagit fram en ny metod för att behandla lymfödem med kirurgi.
Det började med bröstcancer. Varje år får ungefär 6000 kvinnor i Sverige bröstcancer. Nästan hälften av alla kvinnorna får också sina lymfkärl i armhålan bortopererade och därefter får dom ödem i armen. Han fann att volymökningen i armen till 90 procent består av nybildad fettvävnad. Då kom idén att göra en fettsugning följt av kompressionsstrumpa istället för enbart kompressionsstrumpa, en behandling som inte är speciellt bra när svullnaden består av fett.
När man opererar bröstcancer så måste man ofta ta bort lymfkörtlarna i armhålan, för att hindra att cancern sprider sig. Många får sen en svullnad i armen, på grund av att den lymfa som bildas i armen inte kan komma bort på normalt sätt. Armens fettlager under huden förtjockas och blir en kronisk svullnad. En sådan lymfsvullnad kallas också lymfödem. Vanliga besvär vid ett lymfödem i armen är ständig värk, sämre rörlighet och besvärande tyngdkänsla.
Håkan Brorsons metod fanns först bara i Sverige samt Malmö men under åren så har han utbildat läkare Sverige och över hela världen. Nu är den världskänd!
