För några helger sedan hamnade jag av en slump på en konstfacksfest någonstans på Gärdet. Så fort vi klev in genom porten möttes jag av ett dussin välbekanta ansikten, några som jag kunde namnet på och andra som jag kände igen från TV. Förutom tunga SVT-profiler, representerades målgruppen av Nöjesguiden och Rodeos kulturentourage, några kända modedesigners, flamboyanta konstnärsstudenter och andra figurer som det andades högt socialt och kulturellt kapital över. Sammanfattningsvis var det en övervägande vit fest med undantag för en svart man som jag såg jobba i garderoben.
För mig dröjde det inte länge innan jag såg spår och fragment av det jag ville ge uttryck för i den här texten. Konsten gör oftast anspråk på att vara förenande och inkluderande, men den här festen fick mig att känna mig precis tvärtom. Ju mer jag strosade omkring desto mer uppenbart blev det att jag hade svårt att hänge mig själv till den konstnärliga berusning som verkade ha drabbat samtliga festdeltagare. Istället kände jag mig nyktrare , ängsligare och mer exkluderad än någonsin trots att jag drack samma ekovin som alla andra.
Varför var det som om jag såg allting ovanifrån? Varför denna känsla av utanförskap och otillräcklighet?
Plötsligt befann jag mig inte på Gärdet längre, istället hade tankarna fört mig tillbaka till uppväxtorten Haninge, söder om Stockholm. Det är 90-tal och Haninge har rankats högt bland landets fattigaste kommuner. Lunchmenyn på fritids betår av blodpudding, lapskojs, fil och kebabspett om det är något speciellt. Ekomat har ingen ännu hört talas om. Pärlplattorna är fridlysta, tuschpennorna snustorra och leksakscyklarna få.
Att barnen i Bromma har det bättre och att inkomstklyftorna mellan Stockholms förorter är höga, vet vi redan. För det är något som våra bittra fritidsfröknar sällan är sena med att påpeka. Vi får också veta att vi kostar för mycket, att kommunen har det kärvt och att konst och kreativitet är en dyr hobby som endast är reserverat de som har råd att köpa penslar, oljefärg, pärlor och tyger. Föreställningen om att konstverksamhet utgör ett ekonomiskt hot är inte bara något som cementeras av fröknarna på fritids utan också av omgivningen.
Extra tydligt blev det en dag då jag fått lov att följa med min bästa vän hem. Hon bodde i ett mer välbärgat område och familjen tillhörde en av de få som som ägde både bil, hus och båt. Efter en ganska snabb husesyn upptäckte jag till min förvåning att hennes fritidsteckningar ramats in, hängts upp och kilade stadigt tillsammans med annan exklusivare konst på väggen. Det gick inte ihop för mig. Värderades hennes färgstänk lika högt som den där dyra landskapsmålningen? Ja, i hennes hushåll gjorde de det.
Långt senare har jag förstått vilken betydelse den typen av kreativ uppmuntran och likställning hade för hennes självbild , självförtroende, förmåga att ta plats och äga auktoritet utan att skämmas. Det tog mig över 20 år att lista ut det, men idag vet jag att det handlar om klass.
Ja, ni hörde rätt, så innan några av er blir obekväma och avfärdar klassbegreppet som något förlegat och avlägset så håll ut ett tag till så ska jag förklara.
Visserligen går jag inte klädd i blåställ tillvardags och jag jobbar heller inte inom industrin, men för mig går det inte en dag, en konstfacksfest eller ett galleribesök utan att jag påminns om mitt kön, mitt ursprung men framförallt min klassbakgrund, för den går att spåra i min sociala osäkerhet, starka ovilja att framhäva mig själv och konstanta rädsla över att bli avslöjad som mindre kultiverad i finrummena. Kanske beror det på att mina målningar aldrig blev picassoförklarade, men framförallt beror det nog på att jag aldrig haft råd att vara en ”svältande konstnär”. För vilka är det som har råd att svälta egentligen och vilka är det som kan tänka sig yrken med flytande ersättning? Kan det möjligen vara personer som kommer från ekonomiskt trygga hem? Undersökningar av klassbakgrund bland konstnärsstudenter talar sitt tydliga språk, 13 procent av de antagna till Konsthögskolan i Stockholm kommer från arbetarklassen.
